SEA TROUT (SEWIN) GUIDING

We offer guided fishing on two principal Welsh sea trout (sewin) rivers; the Teifi and Towy. These guided sessions can be incorporated into a package that may also include additional elements such as accommodation, or reserved as a standalone service. The guiding is primarily fly fishing based, fishing in the evening and into the night. However, daytime guiding is also occasionally available and may also include other disciplines such as spin and bait, via prior arrangement – please make contact to discuss further.

Guided sessions are a very personal experience. The guide will be with you throughout the session and is there to teach you about how best to approach sea trout with different tactics, whilst also explaining their peculiarities and intricacies. They will provide advice and confidence in terms of safety concerns whilst setting you up with the knowledge to confidently target sea trout on your own on future sessions and for years to come.

Season & When to Visit; the sea trout season in Wales opens on the 1st of April and ends on the 17th October on most rivers. However, the season does not begin in earnest until June, when the main run of sea trout arrive back from the sea. Early season is about quality over quantity – there are few opportunities, but is present will usually be 4 lbs +. Such fishing is better placed for those with a modicum of previous sea trout fishing experience. Late June sees the arrival of the main run, which continues throughout July and August, tapering away in early September. July and August are usually safe bets on our rivers and will give the most consistent sport. Please do make contact to discuss dates and recommendations.

Location; not sure what may suit and where to start? Don’t worry, this is a common concern and one we have addressed several times over the years. We work over a myriad of different beats, with each one having particular intricacies to suit your needs. Also, some rivers within our portfolio will suit you better than others according to your experience, aims and ability. We also offer different exclusivity levels in terms of water; from club water through to private beats. Contact us with your requirements to help us tailor your experience accordingly.

Inclusions & Terms; we have a strict no-alcohol rule on the riverbank. We will not take anglers night fishing if they are, or appear to be, inebriated; this is for their own safety. Guides can offer a transfer service to/from your accommodation if local to the water and if required – this does not incur an additional cost. You do, however, travel in the guide’s vehicle at your own risk.

Equipment; with prior notice we can often provide suitable tackle for your fishing experience. This does not, however, include waders, boots and clothing, due to individual sizing needs. Tackle will be provided free of charge during guided sessions, but we do ask that any damage and breakages are compensated accordingly.

We offer safety equipment (by prior request) free of charge to our clients during guided sessions, which include; wading staffs, safety glasses, automatic life-jackets. Please note your requirements in advance.

Guides will utilise their own fly collection during guided sessions, helping you maximise your experience and time on the water. This is provided free of charge – flies to be returned to the guide. We would ask that you respect this service and offer to financially compensate for lost flies at the end of the session. The same applies for lost spinners, which are expensive to replace. We do offer suitable selections prior to your arrival, which are well received and popular requests – they make a nice gift if you are planning on treating someone and the number/cost can be tailored accordingly.

Schedule; a typical evening involves the guide meeting you at your accommodation or at a prearranged location. The meet up time will vary according to the time of the year (specifically the sunset time) and your package. As a rule, the guide will be with you for a five hour period (from meeting to departure). You will meet two hours or so before darkness falls, which is usually around 8pm in the prime of the season. You will then fish with your guide through to approximately 1am – the guide will never fish, he is there to help you at all times and as needed. Guided sessions may continue beyond 1am, but this is at the discretion of the guide – arrangements can be made directly with the guide.

Cost; the costs for a five hour guided session on the Rivers Teifi or Towy are as follows:

1 person: £200

2 people: £300 (£150 each)

3 people: £390 (£130 each)

If you would like to be guided personally by Steffan Jones, then the following costs apply:

1 person: £300

2 people: £450 (£225 each)

Tipping; all tips go directly to the guide and are appreciated, no matter how small. A typical guideline is £20 per angler per night/session. This is, however, purely at your discretion.

Please note that costs do not include permits nor do they include your government migratory fishing licence, which can be purchased online for a daily, weekly or annual basis. Fishing permits for the water to be fished will be discussed in advance and can be purchased independently or through us.
